Organize Your Laundry Room: Creating a Practical Workspace

Did you know that an average family in America handles around 300 loads of laundry annually? Yet, those 300 loads can feel more like 3,000, particularly when your laundry room is just a dimly lit, disorganized space that hinders rather than helps your workflow!

Many of us can relate to the challenge of managing a cluttered utility room that's expected to serve multiple purposes – from storing cleaning supplies to storing miscellaneous items, while somehow managing to function as a laundry space, too! It's no wonder this becomes overwhelming. But here's the good news: dedicating some time, effort (and yes, perhaps a modest investment) to creating a well-organized, visually pleasing laundry space can save countless hours weekly and transform these essential household tasks from drudgery to almost enjoyable!

A well-organized navy & white laundry with a wood countertop, sink & plenty of great storage.

Let us share our personal journey. When we purchased our Fort Worth home in 2017, it came with a generously sized utility room—but it definitely needed work. Despite having substantial built-in cabinets and a sink, the practical workspace was limited. To transform this space into something more functional, we made some strategic changes: removing an oversized refrigerator that was eating up valuable space, giving the walls a fresh coat of paint, installing a space-saving wall-mounted drying rack that could be folded away, and adding a clever sorting station with an ironing board top that doubled as a folding surface. This sorting station was a game-changer, effectively doubling our counter space!

Our approach to this transformation was straightforward: 1) we identified our specific needs for the space, 2) we mapped out the workflow and necessary tools, and 3) we sourced items that would help us optimize the room. The result? Our utility room has become such an efficient, attractive space that we're happy to leave the door open! We're sharing our experience hoping it will inspire you to see how a thoughtfully planned, well-organized workspace can transform chaos into calm, ultimately giving you back precious time for what truly matters in your life.

Define the Tasks & Workflow for the Room

The first crucial step is determining what tasks you need to accomplish—and can realistically fit—in your utility room space. In our work, we've seen countless utility rooms! Some are truly spectacular with extensive counter space, abundant built-in storage, folding islands, dedicated household management areas, and more. Others are compact spaces just large enough for a washer, dryer, and essential storage shelves. Being realistic about your space is key! You can't expect to manage four major tasks in a space that can only handle two!

Your primary focus should be determining what can be realistically accomplished within your available space, designing an efficient workflow, and organizing everything to achieve that goal.

Just as our professional cleaning teams follow a systematic workflow to clean your home, your laundry space should be thoughtfully designed (or redesigned) with an organized workflow in mind. From our experience working with countless homes, we've found that an efficient laundry room should ideally include these designated zones for a smooth laundry process:

  1. A Sorting Station. We absolutely love built-in cabinetry with slid-out hampers – it's a fantastic solution that keeps laundry sorted while maintaining a clean, uncluttered look. Another excellent option we frequently recommend is the Elfa system from The Container Store. Having personally used Elfa in three consecutive homes for organizing closets and workspaces, we can vouch for its incredible versatility, easy installation, and adaptability as your needs evolve. For a budget-friendly yet practical solution, consider a rolling sorting station – it's wonderfully versatile, allowing you to collect and sort laundry room by room!

  2. Of Course, a Washer & Dryer.

  3. A Folding Area. Based on our experience, you'll want 24 to 36 inches of counter space for comfortable folding and stacking. Modern utility rooms often feature front-loading appliances that can be tucked under a countertop – a wonderful solution that provides ample workspace above! If your space doesn't allow for this setup, we've found success with multi-purpose sorting bins featuring a flat top for folding. We chose this wheeled option from Wayfair ourselves, as it offers flexible folding space that can be repurposed when needed.

  4. Ironing (If You Must). Like many of our clients, we're not fans of ironing! Traditionally, our ironing board was awkwardly stored behind the utility room door or in the garage. However, our current home came with a wall-mounted ironing board cabinet – and we're complete converts! This clever solution opens easily when needed and tucks away completely when not in use. We strongly recommend exploring wall-mounted options, which come in various price points and often include convenient storage for ironing supplies as does this option from Wayfair.

  5. A Clothes Hanging Space. Certain garments deserve proper hanging care, and we've found that a closet-style rod (or multiple rods) installed between cabinets provides the perfect solution for keeping freshly pressed or dried items wrinkle-free until they're moved to their permanent closet home. For spaces where permanent rod installation isn't feasible, we suggest compact, collapsible rolling racks as an excellent alternative!

We recommend arranging tasks to flow sequentially through your laundry space, with similar activities (especially wet tasks) grouped strategically to minimize unnecessary movement. After all, we believe your laundry room should work as efficiently as you do! A well-designed workflow naturally reduces the time and energy you'll spend on laundry tasks.

Find Smart Storage Solutions to Fill Your Needs

From our years of experience, we've learned that storage capacity is absolutely crucial to a functional laundry room. If you're blessed with the opportunity to install floor-to-ceiling cabinets, we highly recommend maximizing every vertical inch – it's amazing how neatly all your supplies can be tucked away. Adding stylish open shelving creates the perfect balance, keeping frequently-used items within easy reach. Don't worry if built-ins aren't possible though – there are lots of free-standing shelf units and cabinets work just as effectively!

Organize Your Storage to Make the Most of Your Space

You know that timeless wisdom from Benjamin Franklin – "A place for everything, everything in its place"? Well, we've found it to be absolutely spot-on for laundry room organization! In our experience, it's truly one of the fundamental principles of maintaining an organized home (and no, we're not suggesting you color-coordinate your cleaning supplies... unless that brings you joy! 😊)

For each workflow zone, we recommend identifying which supplies and tools you need, then categorizing them based on usage frequency. We've found it works best to keep frequently-used items right at your fingertips within their designated work zones, while less-used items can be stored in secondary locations.

We've discovered numerous attractive yet practical storage solutions that keep items easily accessible. For open shelving or upper cabinet organization, we love using turntables, bins, and baskets. For countertop items requiring quick access, we've seen creative solutions ranging from beverage dispensers for liquid detergent to charming glass jars for powder or pods.

When it comes to lower cabinets, we're huge fans of pull-out shelving – whether it's wooden ones installed with the original cabinetry or metal versions added later. Trust us, it's incredibly efficient! No more emptying half the cabinet just to reach items in the back! (And isn't it funny how what you need is always in the very back of the last cabinet you check?)

While infrequently used items don't need prime real estate, we still recommend storing them together, preferably in labeled bins within their specific work zones. This same organizational approach works wonderfully for utility room items that aren't part of your regular laundry routine.

Circling back to Ben's wisdom, we've found that labeling bins and baskets is crucial – it establishes designated homes for specific items. Without labels, bins can slowly transform into catch-all junk drawers. And let's be honest – that's definitely not helping anyone save time or reduce stress!

Source Unique Solutions for Tiny Spaces

When dealing with a compact utility room, we've discovered that clever space optimization becomes absolutely essential. Modern storage solutions are incredibly innovative – they can transform forgotten corners into valuable storage opportunities! We've seen how a narrow floor-to-ceiling cabinet can brilliantly convert dead space into a storage goldmine. Seemingly useless gaps between your stacked appliances and walls can become prime real estate with adjustable shelving. Here are some of our favorite space-saving solutions we recommend for smaller spaces:

  • Fold-away wall-mounted drying racks that tuck neatly out of sight

  • Ultra-slim rolling carts designed to fit perfectly between appliances

  • Multi-functional units such as this unit offered by Wayfair that combines sorting bins, an ironing board and a hanging rack

For these specialty space-saving items, we've had great success shopping at Amazon, The Home Depot, Lowe's, Wayfair, Target, and a personal favorite, The Container Store.

Schedule Tasks to make Laundry Manageable

Is it necessary to have a designated laundry day? Many families do take that approach, but another option is to break laundry tasks into smaller, daily chunks. Try assigning specific laundry tasks to different days: tackle towels on Saturday, refresh bedding on Sunday, and handle personal items throughout the week. This approach prevents that dreaded mountain of laundry from building up over the week!

For those who want to take organization a step further, we recommend implementing a daily routine. If you're working from home, here's an option for incorporating laundry into your schedule:

  • Start your washer before beginning your workday

  • Use your lunch break to transfer clothes to the dryer

  • While preparing or after enjoying dinner, fold or hang items and put them away

Of course, if you're working outside the home, simply adjust this schedule – move the lunch step to when you return home and tackle folding after dinner. We've found this simple daily approach prevents those forgotten wet loads and eliminates those overwhelming end-of-week piles!

Enjoy Your Beautifully Organized & Efficient Laundry Room

We firmly believe that an organized laundry room isn't just about clean clothes – it's about reclaiming your time and reducing the stress of an overwhelming to-do list! Once you've determined your utility room's essential tasks and optimal flow, we recommend taking a gradual approach to improvement. Try implementing one organizing solution each week, or pace yourself according to your budget. We hope our tried-and-tested tips help you create the efficient, peaceful space your family deserves so you can go live your life!
